Cannabis prescription

Medical cannabis is a supportive treatment option used for selected neurological conditions. It can help reduce chronic pain, improve sleep, ease muscle tension and support overall quality of life in patients who do not respond sufficiently to standard therapy.

Medical cannabis is prescribed exclusively by physicians with appropriate certification and experience in this field.

What medical cannabis contains

Medical cannabis contains a wide range of biologically active substances. The most important are:

  • THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) — psychoactive component with analgesic, anti‑spastic and anti‑nausea effects

  • CBD (cannabidiol) — non‑psychoactive component with anti‑inflammatory, anxiolytic and neuroprotective properties

  • Terpenes and flavonoids — substances that influence aroma, effect profile and therapeutic synergy

When medical cannabis may be indicated

Medical cannabis can be considered in patients with:

  • chronic neuropathic pain

  • spasticity in neurological disorders

  • sleep disturbances associated with chronic illness

  • selected neurodegenerative diseases

  • chronic pain after injury or surgery

  • conditions where standard treatment is insufficient or poorly tolerated

The indication is always individual and based on clinical evaluation.

Forms of medical cannabis

Medical cannabis can be prescribed in several forms:

  • dried cannabis for vaporisation, for oral use

  • cannabis extracts

  • capsules or oils (depending on availability)

The choice of form depends on the diagnosis, therapeutic goal and patient preference.

How treatment works

Treatment begins with a consultation, during which the neurologist:

  • evaluates the patient's diagnosis and symptoms

  • reviews previous treatments

  • assesses potential benefits and risks

  • explains the expected effects and limitations

  • determines whether medical cannabis is appropriate

If indicated, a personalised treatment plan is created and the prescription is entered into the electronic system.

Safety and contraindications

Medical cannabis is generally well tolerated, but it is not suitable for everyone. It is not recommended in:

  • severe psychiatric disorders

  • unstable cardiovascular disease

  • pregnancy and breastfeeding

  • history of cannabis misuse

Possible side effects may include fatigue, dizziness or dry mouth. Patients must not drive under the influence of THC.

Follow‑up and monitoring

Regular follow‑up appointments are essential to:

  • assess treatment effectiveness

  • adjust dosage

  • monitor tolerance and safety

  • evaluate long‑term benefit
