The examination is a supportive diagnostic method used to assess possible impairment of the auditory pathway. BAEP testing is performed by a trained nurse. 

The patient sits and wears headphones through which sound stimuli are delivered alternately to the right and left ear. 

The results are evaluated by the neurologist. 

Unlike standard hearing tests, BAEP does not rely on your conscious response. Instead, it directly measures the brain's automatic electrical activity, allowing us to detect hidden neurological and structural issues that standard examinations might miss.

    The auditory and vestibular (balance) systems are anatomically linked. BAEP helps determine whether dizzy spells or balance problems originate in the inner ear or the brainstem neural pathways.

1. How does the BAEP examination work?

The examination is very simple and comfortable; it takes place while lying down on the examination couch. The nurse will attach a few small surface electrodes to your head (on the crown and behind the ears) using a conductive gel. Then, she will place standard headphones on you.

  • We will play sound stimuli through the headphones—a fast, rhythmic clicking (similar to the sound of a ticking clock or a typewriter).
  • The test is performed for each ear separately. While you hear the test clicking in one ear, a quiet static white noise plays in the other ear to isolate ambient sounds.
  • Your only task is to rest quietly and keep your eyes closed. You do not need to respond to the sound or press anything.

2. Does the BAEP examination hurt or is the sound too loud?

The examination is completely painless and safe. The clicking in the headphones is set to a normal, safe volume level that does not harm the human ear and does not cause uncomfortable sensations. Most patients relax nicely during the 20-minute measurement in the chair.

3. What if my hearing is poor? Does the exam still make sense?

Yes, it does. The BAEP examination measures the electrical responses of the nervous system, not your subjective hearing perception. If you have a hearing impairment, we will individually adjust the volume of the clicking before the measurement starts so that the auditory nerve receives the needs stimulus and we can correctly measure the signal conduction speed. 

4. How long does the BAEP examination take?

The measurement of auditory potentials itself takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. The entire visit, including attaching the electrodes, preparing the headphones, and immediate evaluation of the results, takes about 30 minutes

5. How should I prepare for the BAEP examination?

No complex preparation is required. You can eat, drink, and take your medications normally.

  • Clean hair and skin: Wash your hair with shampoo the night before or that morning. Do not apply any hairspray, gel, mousse, or greasy creams to your hair or behind your ears, so that the electrodes can properly record the subtle electrical impulses. Please bring a towel with you.
  • Take off jewelry: Before the exam, we will ask you to remove any earrings that could press under the headphones or distort the measurements.
