Magnetotherapy is a non‑invasive physical therapy method that applies a magnetic field to the body. The energy generated by a high‑intensity electromagnetic stimulator is focused into the tissue to a depth of 10–12 cm, where it can positively influence muscles, connective tissues, bones, joints, and certain neurological conditions. This may help reduce acute and chronic pain, decrease swelling, and improve the properties of connective tissue and synovial fluid in the joints.
During treatment, muscle contractions may occur in the treated area depending on the distance of the applicator head from the tissue (patients may perceive these as "twitching," tingling, or mild stinging).
After the session, the patient may feel mild overall fatigue, and a temporary increase in symptoms may occur due to increased blood flow to the surrounding tissues. This typically resolves within 1–2 days.
The effectiveness of this therapy has been confirmed by a clinical study conducted in the Czech Republic (Spa Dolní Lipová, 2010, published by MUDr. Jiří Poděbradský).
A course of 5–12 sessions is recommended, with each session spaced 2–4 days apart. For the best therapeutic effect, this treatment should be combined with targeted rehabilitation.
Indications
Acute or chronic back pain, lumbar and cervical spine pain
Osteoarthritis
Rheumatic and degenerative arthritis
Joint and connective tissue disorders (frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, enthesopathies such as knee or shoulder pain, ankle sprain, tendon inflammation including Achilles tendonitis)
Muscle spasms and pain
Fracture healing, post‑traumatic musculoskeletal conditions
Myostimulation
Neuropathic pain
Reduction of spasticity
Reduction of swelling
Post‑sports injuries
Contraindications
(Comparable to those for patients undergoing MRI)
Pacemaker or other electrical stimulators (e.g., DBS, VNS, cochlear implant)
Acute infection
Epilepsy (therapy may be applied to joints only – limited use)
Pregnancy
Pain of unknown origin
Active bleeding (due to increased tissue perfusion, which may raise bleeding risk)
History of malignant disease (requires consultation with an oncologist)
Hyperfunction of endocrine glands (requires consultation with an endocrinologist)
Metal implants or clips in the treatment area
During treatment, no metal implants or metal objects may be near the magnetic stimulator. This includes clothing with metal zippers or studs, belts, watches, rings, bracelets, necklaces, piercings, and earrings – these items must be removed if possible. Mobile phones and credit cards must also be kept away, as the strong magnetic field may damage them.
Insurance and Referral
High‑intensity pulsed magnetic therapy is not covered by public health insurance. The therapy is prescribed by a neurologist at our clinic (for our registered patients), or by an orthopedist, rehabilitation physician, neurologist, or rheumatologist who provides ongoing care for the patient. A consultation with our physician is required before the first session to assess suitability for the individual patient.
Patient Experiences – Selected Testimonials
B.M.: "I tried magnetotherapy for my left ankle, which was painful, swollen, and made walking difficult. After several sessions, I noticed the swelling decreasing and walking became easier. The pain is significantly reduced."
D.M.: "My right shoulder was painful, my mobility worsened, and I couldn't dress myself. I had no injury. My right ankle was also swollen and my heel hurt. I attended magnetotherapy 1–2 times a week. The shoulder pain disappeared, mobility improved, and the ankle no longer hurts."
D.R.: "I had pain in my right hip while walking and recurrent swelling of my right knee. My orthopedist recommended hip surgery, which I was afraid of. I walk with two crutches, so I looked for another solution. I attended magnetotherapy regularly 1–2 times a week, about 10 sessions in total. The knee pain completely disappeared, the swelling went down, and the hip pain is much less. Walking is easier overall."
